Net Worth

What you own minus what you owe, in one number. Go to Net Worth.

The Formula

Linked accounts + manual assets - debts

That’s the whole thing, and it’s computed one way everywhere it appears - this page, the tile on your Dashboard, and the projection in Lifetime Planning all use the same calculation.

The Net Worth page: linked account balances, a list of manually entered assets, and a debts table with balance, APR and minimum payment columns
Linked accounts are live from their registers. Other assets and debts you enter yourself.

Linked Accounts

Every account you track with a register: checking, savings, cash, credit cards. Their balances are live - they come from the transactions in those registers, so they move as you categorize and reconcile.

You can’t hand-edit them here, and that’s on purpose. If a balance looks wrong, the fix is in the register, not in a number typed over the top of it. See Accounts & Register.

Other Assets

Things with value that don’t have a transaction register: your home, vehicles, retirement and investment accounts, anything else worth counting.

These you type in and update when they change. Add one with the name and amount at the bottom of the card.

On retirement and investment accounts: if you’re not importing their transactions, list them here and update the balance every so often. A quarterly update is plenty.

Debts

Your liabilities, with the fields that make a payoff plan possible:

  • Balance - what’s owed
  • APR % - the annual rate
  • Min / mo - the minimum monthly payment

Changes save automatically. This is the same list as the creditor table on Debt Payoff - edit it in either place.

A credit card you track as a real account appears through its register balance rather than as a typed figure, so you don’t count it twice.

Keeping It Honest

Reconcile your accounts. A net worth built on unreconciled registers is a guess. See Accounts & Register.

Update manual assets on a schedule, not on a feeling. Revaluing your house whenever you feel good about the market defeats the purpose.

Don’t chase the number. Net worth is a slow indicator. It’s most useful as a trend across years, which is exactly what Lifetime Planning projects.

Where It Goes

  • Dashboard - the tile, with assets and debts beneath it
  • Debt Payoff - your debts are the input to the payoff schedule
  • Lifetime Planning - today’s net worth is where the projection starts
